Start with a Job; Build a Career

$

A job is what you are doing today. A career is built over a lifetime.

When you first apply for a particular role, the company evaluates whether you have the aptitude, skills, experience and education to fulfill that job.  Many times, there are several applicants with similar abilities, so it may come down to cultural fit or just the idea of how you will fit into the current team.  There are assessments, realistic job previews, and interviews in the process... all designed to determine whether or not you will succeed in the role today and into the future.  Likewise, while going through the application, interview and selection process, you are making similar evaluations.  Is this a company or a team in which I would like to work?  Is it the right role for me?  There is no perfect formula.  No one way to say this is the 'perfect' fit.  There is only, "Do we believe this role works for both the company and the candidate?"  If the answer is a resounding, 'yes,' then you receive that exciting call... the offer of employment.

TeleTech is a global organization hiring literally thousands into a variety of jobs every year.  The company represents a world of opportunities for those that would like to accept a job and build a career.

A career is a personal choice and is built over time.  Many start in one job and grow their career within that same job or job family by becoming continuously better in that role.  A customer service associate who has been in the same role for several years will naturally become better over time.  Others may start with what is considered an entry level position and grow by changing positions in essentially the same field.  For instance, I have many friends who started their human capital career as an assistant, later moved on to become a generalist, then develop a specialization in say training, compensation, or benefits.  Still others build the foundation of their career in one field and it changes over time based on their current interests.  A career-minded individual might choose to stay in one company, similar to the success story of Tim Weber, or might choose to grow over time by moving to different organizations.

One piece of cherished advice I received early in my career is to be open to opportunity.  And from my experience, that opportunity may present itself in all shapes and sizes.  Some opportunities seem to come from left field; while others are opportunities that I've made for myself, like my choice to return to school.  Regardless, each one has helped to build my personal career path.  Each opportunity that I have chosen to take advantage of has helped to make me the individual that I am today.  It is the combination of these unique experiences that I bring to my employer.  There are many others who are capable of performing my job, but I do it slightly differently because of my experiences and who I am.  I am a product of my career path and my other life experiences.

Regardless of whether you are looking to obtain your next job or building a career, we thank you for considering TeleTech.  Learn more about TeleTech Career Paths and current Job Openings.  And learn more about TeleTech and our world of opportunities with TeleTech, Revana, Peppers and Rogers Group, iKnowtion, eLoyalty and Percepta.

Spilled Coffee, a Strong Resume, and a Sore Rule of Thumb

$

As I opened up the page today to write down some thoughts, I simultaneously picked up my cup of coffee.  Well, in my case, it's actually chai, but the concept is the same... The paper it was resting upon was a project I've been working on for sometime.  I've been sharing the concept with others in the organization and somehow my point was just not really hitting home.

Glaring down at the paper the cup had been resting upon, I noticed a ring.  I realized that the ring was circling some wording towards the bottom of the page.  And then it hit me.  It was like a sign.  That area that was circled was actually the most important thing on the page.  And it was at the bottom of the page.  I had made a major mistake in forgetting my own writing rule... the "Rule of Thumb."

To demonstrate the Rule of Thumb, pick up a piece of 8-1/2x11 paper.  If you grabbed it naturally, about 1/4 to 1/3 of that paper will be resting above your thumb.  What is above the thumb is the area that is most likely to get read and noticed.  Therefore, that's how much room you have to make an impact on your reader.  I realize today that most resumes are actually reviewed on a computer screen, but the Rule of Thumb still applies.  In most cases, this is approximately the same amount of space you have on the first screen of a computer without having the reader scroll down.  It's the first impression of yourself on paper.

Visual Impact

Yes, looks do matter.

  • Use an easy-to-read font and only one throughout.  You may use different font sizes, bold, and italicize, but keeping with just one font style helps maintain the reader's flow.
  • Maintain white space on the page.  This is a marketing concept that shows that fewer, impactful words, are more likely to be read than a whole bunch of text.
  • Use bullets for particularly important points.

Contact Information

  • Proofread your contact information carefully.  About 20% of resumes do not turn into interviews simply because the recruiter could not contact the individual.  And it's especially easy to overlook a typo in something like your email address.
  • Do only include ways to contact you that you check regularly.  For instance, if you don't check your voice mail at home regularly, leave that number off and only include your cell phone.
  • Do include a personal email address.  I recommend one that has your name in it if possible.  Avoid cutesy, potential discriminators (like 'mommy of'), and hobbies.

What to Highlight

Well, of course there are a lot of schools of thought on this one, but here's what I've seen... There is no real secret or right way, but it is important to customize the beginning of your resume to really fit the job for which you are applying.  Just because you have done a lot of varied things, you don't need to share them all.  Just the ones that that particular recruiter is interested in.  For instance, perhaps you are applying for a role as a Customer Service Representative.  In your work history you have also been in warehousing and a government role, neither of which included any public contact.  These are both great experiences, and you will want to include them in your work history.  However, in the opening, I recommend highlighting your previous work history, experience and skills that can be directly transferrable to the new role for which you are applying.  These might include other customer service positions, retail, hospitality, entertainment or other public contact types of roles and experiences.

Now what do you call the opening?  Some recommend calling it an Objective, others say use something like Summary of Qualifications, others say not to title it at all.  It's really up to you.  My personal recommendation is to use a heading that includes the job title for which you are applying.  Maybe something like "Qualifications as a Customer Service Representative I." Now remember, my point of view comes from the digital age of keywords.  If you want to get noticed, keyword it.

Good luck in your job search!

Own Your Mistakes on the Job

Have you ever made a mistake at work?  Well, of course you have.  We all have.  I call mine "my human moments."

Mistakes are a fact of life.  According to the Bing dictionary, the very definition of a mistake is "an incorrect, unwise, or unfortunate act or decision caused by bad judgment or a lack of information or care."  Mistakes can happen for a myriad of reasons.  For me, it's usually that I'm just not paying full attention, multitasking, or going too fast to think before I act.

Making a mistake at work is going to happen.  It's not necessarily a bad thing that you made a mistake.  What makes a better employee is how you deal with the mistake and what you do to ensure that you or others mitigate the opportunity for the same mistake to happen in the future.  I know, you are probably embarrassed or concerned about the consequences.  From personal experience, I have found the best way to deal with a mistake is just to outright own it.  Admitting that you made the mistake allows you to take the next step.... Action to repair any damage made.  The mistake cannot be undone, but I believe the sooner we take action, the better.

Learn from my experience with making many mistakes over the years... Join with me and own your "human moments."

The Value of Reliability

$

What makes a great employee varies greatly from position to position, employer to employer.  Yet I have observed one trait that seems to be valued in employees, no matter what the pay grade.  It is not about education, though education is needed.  It is not about the skills, though the skills are essential.  It is not about creativity, though employers definitely appreciate a creative thinker.

So what is it?  It is reliability.

Woody Allen once said, "90% of success is just showing up."  I'm not sure I'd personally go that far, but the idea is spot on.  Ask any manager, with nearly any company, and those that they consider to be on their top performers list tend to be the ones that do show up day in, and day out.  I'll add to this and say, "with a great attitude."  I call it being present in both body and mind.  Simple concept, right?  You can only do your job if you are at your job.  You can only be a top performer of your duties and get your projects in on time if you are present and interested in being a top performer.

So what value do employers place on reliability? Interestingly enough, it is not always a trait that is considered on a performance review.  Rather, the presence or lack of reliability will show up in other areas.  When an employee has an inordinately high number of absence, this can affect the other members of the team who have to pick up the slack.  Because this employee has taken off time in the middle of a project, the deadline may suffer.  It is a domino effect.

So how do you show your reliability? I like to think of it as an appointment at my dentist.  If I don't show up, I'm still charged for the appointment.  It's a commitment and there is a value attached to it.  Consider work to be a commitment.  I recommend that when you commit to an interview and show up and be early.  If you've accepted another job offer first, call the employer and let them know.  It's both courtesy and can affect your own personal employment brand.  You never know when you might interview with someone later that works for the employer.  Accept the job offer and be ontime for training.  Plan any time off after your first few months of employment.  Take time off when you need it, but be up front about it.

The value of your time to your employer = your total compensation package.  The value of reliability = PRICELESS.

Turning Personal Connections into Gainful Employment - Networking for Jobs 101

$

If you were to ask a group of random employers what is their best source of 'great employees,' the largest percentage of them would say referrals.  Referrals are typically those hires that are sent to them through current or former employees of the company, friends of employees or through community organizations. This is the same at TeleTech.  The largest percentage of TeleTech new hires come from the group of people that have been referred into work at TeleTech, especially by current employees, than from any other single resource.

Why do referrals work for businesses?

Referrals tend to be a great resource for employers for a variety of reasons.  The two primary reasons that it works is:

  • The employee probably already has some basic idea about the job (from their friend or family member)
  • And they already have built a personal relationship with a future coworker.

How Can You Get Referred?

Armed with the knowledge that a majority of employers tend to look favorably upon candidates that are referred into them, how can you benefit from this knowledge?  Through networking.  Some think of networking as going to a business after hours and shaking hands or to a professional meeting.  This is a part of it, but there is so much more.  And those that learn to effectively use their network, will score more interviews and ultimately a stronger position.

Networking in its simplest form is just talking to other people and learning ways that you might be able to benefit them (either today or in the future) and that they might be able to benefit you.  Every one of us already has a network, though some are larger than others.  Your first level network consists of all the people that you know.  This can include friends, family members, teachers, community members that you might come into contact with, and more.  Your second level network is all of the people that they know and so on.  Social media has expanded this even further to include anyone within several degrees of your 'friends' or 'connections.'

What's the best way to utilize your network?

The most common mistake with those that are networking for their next job is to just reach out and let everyone know that you may be looking for a job.  While you certainly want to market that to your friends and family, this does not help your network help you.  It is in our nature as humans to want to help our fellow man.  So make it easy for your network members to help you.

Here's some simple steps to getting referred into your next employer.

  • Know Yourself -- Be very clear to yourself what type of work you are seeking.  While it may sound enthusiastic to say, "I'll do anything."  Interviewers know this is not really the case, nor are you qualified for just anything.  Be ready to define the types of skills you have, the types of jobs you are willing to do, and how you could have a positive impact on a potential employer.

  • Be Specific -- Related to the first, be specific about not only the types of jobs you are interested in, but also the employers.  If you find a job through another source, like a job board, reach out to your network.  Do you know someone or someone that knows someone that works for that employer?  Then ask to be referred into the employer.  This also goes back to human nature.  Once we are happily employed, we may not even realize what opportunities are available within our own employer.  Make it easy for your network to refer you by letting them know that you say a position listed that you have an interest in.  Send them your resume and ask for an introduction either to the hiring manager or the recruiter in charge of that area.

  • Do The Paperwork -- Online applications are time consuming.  However, they are there for a reason.  Employers need the information at some point to be able to hire you.  Even though you have been referred, also go through the process of completing the organization's online application or other information requested.  This makes it easier for the recruiter as they will at some point in time have to have you in their system.  Again, you want to make it easy for them.  When you do this, be sure to include your network contact's information.

  • Follow Up -- Whether or not you receive the job or even just a simple call back, be sure to follow up with your network contact.  Let them know where you are in the process.  And thank them for their time.

Remember, your network can help you get noticed.  The rest is up to you.

The Rose... Customer Service to Customer Experience (a Career at TeleTech)

Each separate customer service interaction is to a customer experience as a petal is to a beautiful flower.  Picture in your mind a deep red, fragrant rose.  You can see it, smell it, and touch it.  You can feel it's soft texture.  You might even be able to imagine hearing the bees busy in their daily routine around the rose bush.  All of this creates an experience of the rose.

rose petal... customer service representativeNow image that you pluck one petal off of that rose.  Did it keep its aroma?  Are the remaining petals still soft to the touch?  Is it still a rose?  Absolutely.  A rose is a rose.  Yet somehow, it is a little bit less of one.  Attempting to glue the petal back on just doesn't work.  That petal will simply wilt.  This is similar to a customer experience.  One individual transaction may or may not break the entire experience, and yet it somehow suffers just a little.

Now think of your favorite restaurant or coffee house.  Is it just the food or the coffee you are purchasing?  Absolutely not.  You are buying an experience.  Is the establishment busy and loud with vibrant colors; or is it quiet with subdued music and candlelight?  Do you serve yourself or have to stand in line?  It is all a part of the total customer experience.  And you know what to expect the next time you come in.  Now imagine being able to bottle that customer experience... to package it somehow with a nice little bow.  That's the path that TeleTech has taken... an end-to-end customer experience for our client's customers.

At TeleTech, we hire a lot of great customer service and technical service representatives.  These valued employees are the front line and sometimes the most "visible" people in our company.  They play a very important role... delivering great customer service to our clients' customers.  TeleTech employees deliver millions of customer service interactions every day.  And all of us have been on the consumer end of a customer service transaction.  We encounter customer service when we're shopping at the local store, purchasing online, even when we have a plumber come out to fix our pipes.  Most of us know what good customer service looks and feels like.  It's all part of the bigger picture called a customer experience.

That is how TeleTech is now building careers.  Yes, TeleTech hires many customer service representatives in its delivery centers. It is a noble career choice.  The customer service representative is the petal to rose.  And now, in addition to the customer service representatives, TeleTech and its family of companies are also building careers by further helping our clients to build a complete customer service experience for their customers.

This means we are also building careers.  Some of these careers are for sales professionals to build value for our clients, technology professionals to help build the systems to deliver great customer service for our clients, consultants to help our client's identify opportunities in their customer service cycle, and analysts and statisticians who have mastered the ability to predict customers' behaviors.  It means being a part of a grander design... the ability to deliver great customer service in turn building a great customer experience for our clients' customers.

Bloggers' Note:  TeleTech Holdings, Inc. provides end-to-end customer experience service for partners to help them build a better experience for their customers.  Our family of companies includes TeleTech, Direct Alliance Corporation, eLoyalty, Peppers and Rogers Group, and now iKnowtion

Ideal Employee Essentials... the Annie Qualities

$

I was in a particularly contemplative mood the other day and was just watching my three dogs play.  We have Lady, the matriarch of the group.  She is a 13-year-old, 85-pound black lab.  While her hips don't let her move like she once did, she still has the heart of a 4-year-old and will put in her best effort.  Then comes Taylor.  Taylor is a 3-year-old, yellow lab with the energy to match.  Taylor is a bit goofy, overzealous, and is like a big kid.  She sometimes gets so excited as to trip over her own feet.  Then comes Annie.  Annie is my 2-year old Pembroke corgi.  She is the smallest of the bunch, but don't tell her that. She is spunky, determined, and sometimes a bit hard-headed.

Annie and TaylorSo why am I talking about my dogs?  On this particular day, I had been thinking about my team and the idea of what makes the 'ideal employee.'  In their play, I realized that I saw Annie displaying some of those qualities that I appreciate in a great coworker.

We all bring different skills and abilities to an organization.  The diversity of those talents, when combined, is what makes an organization great.  Yet there are similarities that most companies, including TeleTech, look for when looking to build its talent base.  It's a spectrum with extremes on both sides and yet, Annie's playful afternoon, showed me how to balance the extremes.

Annie is only about 18 inches tall, and about 3 feet long.  Corgis were originally bred to herd cattle.  She is the smallest of the three dogs, but as I mentioned earlier, she doesn't know it.  She has the heart of a lion and thinks she rules the roost.

I observed the trio playing with a few toys on their own.  They had a stick (that looked a bit too much like a piece of my porch, but that's a story for another day).  Taylor was running up the stairs and dropping the stick down.  Lady, in her wisdom, would wait at the bottom of the stairs while the other two ran themselves ragged up and down.  The labs usually reached the stick at the same time.  Annie spoke up regularly to let the others know that this was a team effort.  She would then grab one end and help them carry it back to the bottom of the stairs.  This show of both empowerment and team work displayed ideal employee quality number one.

Annie Quality #1:  Team player that is willing to stand up for what's right.

Taylor is much larger than Annie.  Taylor can jump up on just about anything in the backyard without a second thought.  Annie usually tries to follow.  There are railroad ties stacked about four feet high.  Taylor took a running leap off.  Annie started at full force after her, then came to a screeching halt.  She looked around and found that she could actually cut off Taylor in her path, not by leaping off to a depth taller than she is, but by going around and squeezing under the a bush where Taylor couldn't fit. Annie was able to evaluate the risk and capitalize on her talents to mitigate them.

Annie Quality #2:  Risk Taker with the ability to capitalize on strengths to mitigate those risks.

Annie continued to be in the moment, playing hard with the other two for more than an hour straight.  When they were done with their activites, all three, including Annie, laid down and left the play behind.  It took her only moments to go from full speed to fully relaxed.  She was in complete and utter recharge mode for when she'd need that energy again.  I believe this is a truly admirable quality.

Annie Quality #3:  Hard worker that knows how to relax.

This particular afternoon put a new meaning for me to the phrase, "Work like a dog."  Bringing the balance to her life, Annie has displayed to me qualities that I strive for in work, play, and life in general.  Thanks Annie.

Tim WeberTim is a true TeleTech success story.  Knowing Tim had been with TeleTech for more than 15 years and had built a career from the ground up, I decided to learn more.  In my research, the first thing I ran across was his profile on a popular professional networking site, which I believe says a lot all in itself about Tim.  His heading simply reads, “Business Leader and Dad.”

He has both excelled in his career with the company, while building a family which includes his wonderful wife, Lily, and three adoring children Jaazaniah, Timothy, and Jireh.  Both a social and technology-savvy gentleman, Tim’s social media updates one minute could be about the latest and greatest technology in Human Capital, selection, or social networking.  The next will include his frolics at the local park with one of his children or latest proud moment at the parent-teacher conference.

Tim started his career as a TeleTech customer service associate.  He understands that the business of TeleTech is to help our client companies satisfy their customers.  This knowledge and understanding about the purity of managing a strong customer service experience helped Tim propel over the past 15 years through a variety of positions.  His job titles with TeleTech have included OJT Coach, Supervisor (Team Lead), Trainer, and Instructional Designer.  He continued his growth within Learning & Leadership Development as Manager, Sr. Manager and Director.

Today, Tim has transitioned his talent to supporting the selection of more great talent globally for TeleTech in his current role of Director of Global Selection and Talent Management.   This team supports how TeleTech assesses the skills of future TeleTech associates, with Tim’s specialty being cross-cultural communication skills.  At the end of the day, Tim is continuing to build and foster the great customer service skills that he once brought to the front lines himself by helping to select the best candidates to provide these services on behalf of the global TeleTech clients.

Simply Syndicate Your Job Search Through RSS

So you’re ready for a new job.  Now it is time to find that perfect one for you.  The job search is a job all in itself and most of us, while an expert in our chosen professions, are ill-prepared for what’s ahead.  I like to recommend breaking down the sometimes daunting idea of a job search into smaller manageable pieces.  Today, I’d like to focus on a tactic to keep job opportunities flowing into you through RSS feeds.

As you have probably already discovered, the majority of job search today is conducted electronically.  You search through job boards and company websites like TeleTechJobs.com.  You apply online through an applicant tracking system. You may connect with the recruiter through a social media site like LinkedIn.  Then later set up your interview schedule via email.   It’s all mass media, mass communications, and can feel very impersonal.  Savvy job seekers are now organizing this massive amount of information to their advantage by receiving jobs, articles, and research about the companies you are interested in through RSS feeds.

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's an easy way for you to keep up with news and information that's important to you… your jobs, your industry, your potential employers.  This content is called a feed.  The information is then stored and waiting for you when you are ready to view it.  And, as an added bonus, it keeps your email inbox clean.

How Do I View RSS?

All you need is an RSS reader.  Many email software providers like Microsoft Outlook and custom home page providers have RSS readers embedded or there are literally hundreds that you can download from the web.  They’re free.  Find one that works for you.

How Would I Use RSS to My Advantage?RSS

Let’s say you’ve done some searches online through major job boards, niche job boards, and company websites.  When you’ve found a few sites that seem to fit your interest, look for the orange and white RSS symbol.  Click on that button and you’ll find the link to subscribe.  For the shrewd job seeker, most of these websites RSS subscriptions will allow you to customize the information that will appear on the search, by getting very granular in your navigation on the page even before you click on it.

TeleTechJobs.com has RSS feeds available for both our jobs and our blog content.  To subscribe to the TeleTechJobs.com jobs feed, go to the Advanced Search page.  Conduct the search that best represents the types of jobs you are seeking.  For instance, say you are looking for Customer Service jobs in the Philippines, make those selections first.  Click the SEARCH button.  Once you generally have the search parameters down, click on Subscribe to RSS.  You can then grab the link and put that into your RSS reader.  As new jobs hit our website that fit your interest, they will automatically go to your personal reader… Personalize job search fed to you just-in-time.

RSS job feed - customer service jobs

Interested in receiving the TeleTechJobs.com bloggers’ advice on a regular basis?  On the Career Blog page, you can subscribe to the blog to come to your RSS reader at the top of the screen… or select a favorite blogger and subscribe to just that feed.

A Rosa...

Isto é semelhante à experiência do cliente.

Nossa família de empresas inclui a TeleTech, a Revana, a eLoyalty, a Peppers and Rogers Group e agora a iKnowtion.

Tuition Reimbursement: How One TeleTech USA Employee is Learning While Earning

$

Chatting through the TeleTech social media channels, I recently had the chance to virtually meet one of our many employees who work in the USA TeleTech@home division.  Ray Osborne is an industry correspondent, a part-time TeleTech@home employee, and a student furthering his education.  He's a military veteran and lives in Cape Canaveral Florida. Ray started working for TeleTech in October 2012.

"I like working from home and the home-shoring infrastructure Teletech has built to enable a 'work at home' environment. And of course, I like the client’s product mix of consumer electronics," shared Ray.  For those considering a job with TeleTech, Ray suggests to be persistent.  It may take some time to go through the hiring and training process, but it is worth it.  Things get easier as you go along.

Wanting to further his education, Ray heard about the TeleTech tuition assistance program available to US employees and decided to check it out. Ray is currently studying for his Associates in Business degree at Eastern Florida College in Cocoa, Florida, taking courses both in person and online.

Ray shared his experience with the tuition reimbursement benefit:

"I used the reimbursement benefit to help with my educational costs like tuition and books.  It’s a big help to have financial assistance and it i encouraging to know that my employer supports me with my continued education. My major areas of study is Writing Composition and Market Research. I’ve written and authored books and papers before but now I am studying my craft even further to do more business related writing. I would like to be a market research supplier and continue with my business writing. Continuing my career with Teletech and using my refined skills would be ideal."
